The Alberta Association of Midwives is the professional body representing midwives and the practice of midwifery in the province of Alberta.

As the official voice of Alberta midwives, we develop, promote and advocate for the professional, economic and social interests of our members. Membership with the AAM is available to Alberta Registered Midwives, formerly registered midwives and midwifery students currently enrolled in an approved program.
Member Benefits
01 — Representation
The AAM is the sole and exclusive representative of midwives and the profession of midwifery in Alberta. We provide members with a voice and professional support during negotiations for funding of midwifery services with Alberta Health Services.

Including a Member Assistance Program and member extended benefits (individual or family) of health and dental coverage, life, disability, accidental death and dismemberment and critical illness.
04 — Continuing Education*
Including Emergency Skills Workshops, Neonatal Resuscitation Program, GynZone (suturing module), conferences, webinars and privacy resources.
*Some may require additional fees on top of member dues.
05 — Participation
Active and Inactive members have voting privileges and are considered a "Voting Member." They can attend members meetings, vote on member resolutions, and serve on our board of directors, governance bodies and external committees.
06 — Information
All members are automatically enrolled as a member of the Canadian Association of Midwives (CAM) and receive the Canadian Journal of Midwifery Research and Practice 3 times/year as well as other CAM benefits. All members also receive regular email newsletters regarding topics important to the profession and community.
Membership Basics
If you are seeking Active membership, you must first be registered with the College of Midwives of Alberta.
Midwifery services in Alberta are publicly funded through Alberta Health Services (AHS). The AAM cannot guarantee funding to any individual midwife. In applying for a midwifery position at a practice in Alberta, you should contact AHS to confirm if there is a funded position available. You can contact AHS at midwives@ahs.ca
Hospital privileging is controlled by Alberta Health Services (AHS) and cannot be guaranteed by the AAM. Once you are a member of the AAM and have your certificate of professional liability insurance, you may apply to AHS for hospital privileging. Privileges can take up to 90 days to obtain and may be unavailable or restricted in certain areas of the province.
The AAM's membership year runs from April 1 to March 31 with an annual renewal submission deadline on February 15. You can become a member at any time and fees may be pro-rated, please contact membership@alberta-midwives.ca for more information. Insurance fees cannot be prorated as set out in our funding agreement with AHS. Fees can be paid online or via bank draft. Membership and insurance processing can take up to 15 business days.
