Midwifery Education

Midwives are highly skilled and educated primary care providers, who are considered experts in normal pregnancy, birth and postpartum care.

Exploring Midwifery as a Career

To become a Registered Midwife in Alberta, you must complete a robust midwifery education program. The College of Midwives of Alberta sets all educational requirements, including continuing education requirements, this includes regular recertification of CPR, Obstetrical Emergency Skills, and Neonatal Resuscitation.

There are currently seven midwifery education programs available in Canada. Education programs provide a “direct entry,” which means that, once a person graduates from the program, there is no other credential required to apply for registration as a midwife. If you are planning on practicing in Alberta after graduation, any education program of interest should be discussed with the College of Midwives of Alberta, this includes regular recertification of CPR, Obstetrical Emergency Skills and Neonatal Resuscitation.

Another thing to know if you are planning to practice in Alberta after graduation is that midwifery services in Alberta are publicly funded through Alberta Health Services (AHS). In applying for a Midwifery position at a Practice in Alberta you should contact AHS to confirm if there is a funded position available. You can contact AHS at midwives@ahs.ca.
